Macedonia

In the heart of southeastern Europe, Macedonia lies buried in between several countries. However, the country is not underground. Its position throughout history provided that ultimate highway for many, serving as a crossroads between Christian Europe and the mystifying Orient. Macedonia may be small, but the country proves size has no limitations on the amount a country can offer to travelers.

People have occupied the small country that is Macedonia for centuries. Starting in the 5th century C.E. massive groups of people arrived on the mountainous cliffs of Macedonia and covered its many lakes. A combination of Macedonians and Slavic tribes made up more of the country’s growing population at this time. Eventually, Macedonia would grow to include a population of Albanians, Turks, and Serbs just to name a few.

Part of all the people that have occupied Macedonia and continue to settle in the country has contributed to a unique cultural and historical make-up to its sites. Macedonia is filled with those antique theaters, Byzantine churches, Ottoman mosques and even traces of a Stone Age past. The capital city of Skopje is a perfect launching point to see those varying touches to Macedonia. The Stone Bridge, Skopje Fortress, and Skopje Bazaar showcase those ancient aspects to Macedonia as a whole.

For more natural beauty, Macedonia is certainly not lacking. Just two hours from Skopje by car, Ohrid rests along a massive lake. Upon first glance, that lake looks much more like a vast sea. It is in fact the largest and deepest lake in the country. It also has been said to be one of the oldest lakes in Europe when tectonic forces formed the natural landmark two to three million years ago. The actual town of Ohrid was put on the prestigious UNESCO list. It is easy to see why so many would find this area extraordinarily beautiful, even inspiring legend. After a visit, it may feel that trip was also all a part of a myth.
