About Lisbon

The clicking and clacking of old yellow trams resounds throughout the streets. Passing through gothic cathedrals, UNESCO monasteries, quaint restaurants and squeezing down tiny lanes, you have found yourself in only one place, Lisbon. The capital of Portugal rests across the hills overlooking Rio Tejo. There isn’t much to find displeasing when it comes to Lisbon. It is hard to hate a city so cool, cosmopolitan and creative. Well, perhaps just out of jealousy.

Part of Lisbon’s appeal is merely through its outward appearance. Churches, castles and towers cover the city, mirroring the postcard images on sidewalk cafés rotating stands. The Sé, the town’s Cathedral, regales in its Romanesque style. Constructed by Portugal’s first king, the Cathedral is home to a 13th century cloister and the remains of St. Anthony, the city’s patron saint.

On the city’s shelf, out of reach like that coveted candy in the back of the cabinet, the Castelo de Sao Jorge sets up on the highest of Lisbon’s seven hills. Not only does the Castle boast a stunning location, but it also holds a unique history. The Romans, Visigoths and even the Moors conquered Castelo de Sao Jorge. During the late 15th century, it transitioned into a royal residence. Today, visitors flock to the hills to see the Castelo’s walls, towers and gardens with a panoramic view of Lisbon in between it all.

Lisbon’s notable landmarks just keep on giving and reaching great heights. The Torre de Belém sits in its 16th century style. The white stone tower is known throughout the city for its architecture. It is hard to imagine Torre de Belém constructed for any other purpose than to be eye candy. The tower was originally put in its position to defend the nearby river from invaders.

While landmarks are all fine and well, Lisbon calls for exploration through its neighborhoods and districts. An area that shouldn’t be missed is undeniably Alfama. Dressed in steep cobblestoned streets, Alfama is one of the city’s oldest quarters. While the Visigoths inhabited the area in the 5th century, the Moors brought Alfama to life. Much of that life still breathes throughout the atmosphere, serving as the more traditional side of the city. While history fans can’t get enough of Alfama, others are just looking for where the party plays out in town. Bairro Alto hosts the city’s beating nightlife. Music travels through the streets as small bars and restaurants give the people what they want.

Closing out the day, yellow trams whiz on by, beaconing you to hop on board. Almost like train car school buses, the trams of Lisbon are iconic. Vintage in style and feel, the mode of transport runs all over the city center. You could hop off if you see some of the city’s overwhelming yet remarkable architecture or just cruise on by, appreciating each street corner and stop. Lisbon will induce jealousy for you aren’t this cool, nor ever will be.
