About Calgary

Canada’s Wild, Wild West occurred in and around Calgary. What began as a sleepy little town is now one of the fastest growing cities in all of Canada. Situated in the Alberta province, Calgary boasts a unique location where the prairie touches toes with the mighty Rocky Mountains. Some may say Calgary has its cowboy boots on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The cowboy town struck black gold in oil, largely driving its economy to this day. Put on your Stetson and get ready to head into Canada’s cowboy country.

Constructed during Calgary’s oil rich days of the 1960s, the Glenbow Museum came about to house a collection that celebrated the Canadian West. Within, museum goers will find Canadian indigenous art and fur trade exhibits. As the Glenbow Museum contains Canada’s West, the Art Gallery of Calgary pays tribute to contemporary art. The art gallery is known for its high standard of work on display.

Calgary has been famous throughout the world during certain points in time. While most associate the city with oil, Calgary hosted Olympic greatness back in 1988. Visitors can still experience that time at the Canada Olympic Park. The 1988 Winter Olympics were held here on the western edge of town. The Park contains the Olympic Hall of Fame along with 70 meter and 90 meter high ski jumps.

Situated on the southwest edge of the city, the Fish Creek Provincial Park presents a little bit of country and wilderness just beyond the city limits. The sanctuary for wilderness offers countless trails for exploring. Walkers and mountain bikers tend to cover most of these paths. A more historical lesson in a park comes through Fort Calgary Historic Park. Dating back to 1875, the space shows just where Calgary was born. The Canadian government dispatched a troop of North West Mounted Police here. Today, visitors can walk through preserved buildings from that time.

When traveling to Calgary with children, little ones are easily entertained in the city. Many come here for the Calgary Park, western Canada’s largest amusement park. If roller coasters and rides aren’t your thing, head to the Calgary Zoo, Botanical Garden and Prehistoric Park with shorter in stature travelers. The Zoo alone houses 1,100 animals and 300 different species. It remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in the city. The Botanical Gardens hold a wondrous butterfly garden, rain forest garden and waterfalls. If more prehistoric animals and plants thrill, the Prehistoric Park contains 22 life size dinosaur models.

When July rolls around in Calgary a stampede rushes to the city in more ways than one. The Calgary Stampede serves as one of the grandest celebrations of cowboy culture in the world. From chuck wagon races, rodeos, square dancing and parades, the Calgary Stampede plows over visitors with countless events.

Appropriately towering over the city, the Calgary Tower stands amidst skyscrapers and big buildings. The Tower reaches a height of 190 meters. Visitors that decide to head to the top will experience a bird’s eye view of the city and the Rocky Mountains. A visit to the Calgary Tower is a perfect way to round out the day in the city. Visitors can admire the city’s stunning location at the edge of the foothills of mountains and flatland rushing to meet it all in one landscape.
